How to type a check mark in Word

  1. Click where you want the check mark.
  2. Choose Wingdings in the font list on the Home tab.
  3. Hold Alt and type 0252 on the number pad, then let go of Alt. A check mark appears. Use 0254 for a box with a check.
  4. Switch the font back before you go on typing, or the next letters turn into symbols too.

On a laptop without a number pad, use Insert, Symbol, choose Wingdings in the font box and pick the check mark, or switch to Wingdings 2 and type a capital P. You can also paste a symbol copied from this page, with no font change at all.

How to add a check mark in Excel

Excel works the same way as Word: set the cell font to Wingdings and type ü. To fill many cells at once, set the column font to Wingdings and enter =CHAR(252). For a ticked box use =CHAR(254).

Wingdings 2 is easier on any keyboard: set the font to Wingdings 2 and type a capital P for a tick or a capital O for an X. Remember that the cell still holds a plain letter. Sorting, filtering and formulas see ü or P, not a check mark.

Copying check marks to other apps

Wingdings only draws a check mark in apps that have the font and use it for that text. In a chat, an email or a social post, a Wingdings check mark becomes the letter ü or P. That is why the cards above copy Unicode symbols instead: ✓ (Check Mark), ☑ (Ballot Box with Check) and the others are real characters, so they keep their meaning wherever they are pasted. Each device draws them with its own fonts, so the exact shape and weight can change.

For every other symbol in the font, see the Wingdings alphabet chart. The Wingdings 2 translator turns whole messages into Wingdings 2 symbols, and how to type in Wingdings covers Google Docs, Mac and phones.
