How to use the Gaster translator
- Type your message in the English box. The Gaster version appears in the black box as you type.
- Leave Capital letters (Gaster style) ticked to match the game, or untick it to use lowercase symbols.
- Press Copy to paste the symbols into a chat or a post, or Save as PNG to keep an image that looks the same everywhere.
- To read Gaster text, press the arrows between the two labels and paste the symbols. Only have a screenshot? Open the symbol keyboard and tap each symbol you see to decode it.
Why Gaster text needs capital letters
Wingdings draws every keyboard key as a different picture, and capital and lowercase letters are different keys. HELLO in capitals becomes pointing hands, two frowning faces and a flag. hello in lowercase becomes two zodiac signs, two black circles and a square.
The Wingdings text that fans connect with Gaster uses the capital-letter symbols, which is why the translator turns letters into capitals for you. Numbers and punctuation have their own symbols too, and they are the same either way. Every symbol is listed on the Wingdings alphabet chart.
Copying Gaster text without emoji
Many Wingdings pictures also exist as emoji, and phones like to show them in color. Each symbol this translator copies carries an invisible marker that asks for the plain black text style instead, and most apps respect it.
Four capital letters usually do not stay black: C, D, K and M are color emoji by default, so most phones show them as a color thumbs up, thumbs down, neutral face and bomb. If your message needs to look exactly like the game, save it as a PNG instead of pasting text.
Who is W. D. Gaster?
W. D. Gaster is a mysterious character from Undertale, the 2015 role-playing game by Toby Fox. He only turns up in hidden content that many players never see, and players usually link the game's Wingdings text to him. Two of the main characters, Sans and Papyrus, are named after fonts, and fans read the W. D. in Gaster's name as a nod to WingDings.
That mystery is why fans write Gaster messages for art, posts and puzzles. For a worked example, see how to read Undertale's Entry Number 17. The same tool without the capital-letter switch is the Wingdings translator.
This is an independent fan tool. It is not affiliated with Undertale or Toby Fox and uses no material from the game.
