    How to play

    1. Tap a square or a number in the key. Every square with that number lights up.
    2. Tap a letter, or type it. It fills in everywhere that number appears.
    3. Keep going until the whole grid is correct. The game notices as soon as it is.

Reveal letter fills in the selected number, and Check marks any wrong letters in red. Each counts as a hint. Undo steps back as far as you like, and you can change any letter at any time.

    Tips for solving a codeword

    • Start with the given letters. E and other common letters unlock the most words.
    • Find a short word with gaps. A four letter word with two letters known has few possibilities.
    • Use word endings. -ER, -ING, -ED and -LY show up often, and so do double letters such as LL, EE and TT.
    • Check the crossings. If a guess makes a crossing word impossible, it is wrong.
    • Watch the keyboard. Faded letters are already used, and each letter belongs to only one number.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a codeword puzzle?

A codeword is a crossword where the clues are replaced by numbers. Each number always stands for the same letter, so every letter you work out fills in all over the grid. Some puzzle books call them code crackers.

    How do I start?

Two common letters are given. Look for a word where those letters leave only one or two gaps, and guess what it could be. Each new letter gives you more to work with.

How is this different from a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a sentence in which letters are swapped. A codeword is a grid, so the crossing words help you check your guesses in two directions. If you enjoy one, you will probably enjoy the other.

Are there new puzzles every day?

Yes. The daily puzzle changes at midnight on your device, and everyone on the same calendar day gets the same grid. Practice mode gives you a fresh grid whenever you want.

Are the grids as dense as a newspaper codeword?

No. These grids have about a dozen crossing words, generated from a list of common words, so they are lighter and quicker than a printed one. They are a good size for a phone.
