Gothic: the Fraktur letters, with an old blackletter feel.
Bubble and square: letters inside circles and boxes.
Wide text: the full-width characters behind the vaporwave look.
Upside down and backwards: flipped text that makes people turn their phones around.
Why these fonts work everywhere
Normal fonts are a setting: copy bold text from a document into a chat and the bold disappears. Fancy text is different because the style is built into the characters. Unicode, the standard that covers the world's writing systems, includes several alphabets of letter-like symbols. Mathematicians needed bold and script letters that keep their meaning, so Unicode gave them their own characters, and the same goes for the circled letters and the full-width forms used in East Asian typing.
Want a real secret code?
Fancy text is decoration, and anyone can read it. To actually hide a message, try the Caesar cipher or Wingdings. For something glitchier, there is the Zalgo text generator.
Frequently asked questions
How does a fancy text generator work?
It does not change the font. It swaps each letter for a different Unicode character that looks like a styled letter, such as the mathematical bold ๐ instead of A. Because those are real characters, the style stays when you paste them somewhere else.
Where can I paste fancy text?
Anywhere that accepts Unicode text, which covers most social apps, bios, usernames, chats and game names. Some sites strip or block unusual characters in usernames, so try it first if the name matters.
Why do I see boxes instead of letters?
The device reading the text has no font with those characters. Older phones and computers are the most common cause. The styled text is only as visible as the fonts on the reader's device, so a simpler style such as bubble or small caps may work better.
Why are numbers or punctuation not styled?
Unicode only has styled versions for some characters. Most styles cover the letters A to Z, some cover digits too, and anything without a styled version stays as you typed it.
Is fancy text bad for accessibility?
It can be. Screen readers may read these characters one by one, by their technical names, or skip them. Search engines may not match them to normal words either. Use them for decoration, and keep important information in plain text.
