How to get bold text

Which bold style should you use?
Sans bold looks most natural next to normal app text. It is the safest choice for captions.
Bold has more character and suits headings and quotes.
Bold italic and Sans bold italic add emphasis to a single phrase.
Bold cursive and Bold gothic are decorative, so keep them short.
Bold text in chat apps
Some apps have their own formatting, which is better than Unicode bold when it is available, because the text stays normal for search and screen readers. In Discord, put two asterisks on each side of your text. In WhatsApp, put one asterisk on each side. Unicode bold is for places with no such option, such as bios and usernames.

What is the difference between Bold and Sans bold?
Bold has small serifs on the letters, like a newspaper headline. Sans bold has clean strokes, which look closer to the normal text in most apps, so it blends in better.
Are numbers bold too?
Yes, in Bold and Sans bold. Bold italic and the other bold styles only cover letters, so their numbers stay normal. Punctuation stays normal in every style.
Why does bold text show up wrong for some people?
The bold letters are mathematical symbols in Unicode. A device without a font for them shows boxes. Search and screen readers may not treat them as normal words either, so avoid them for your name or anything people need to find.
