- Choose Wingdings 3 in the font selector and type in the English box. Your text turns into arrows as you type. Press Copy, Save as PNG or Share link to use the result.
- To read arrows back as text, press the arrow between the two labels and paste them. The translator shows which font it detected, and a Change link lets you correct it.
- Only have a screenshot? Open the symbol keyboard below the translator and tap each symbol you see to decode it.

How Wingdings 3 differs from Wingdings
Wingdings is a mixed bag: hands, faces, crosses, stars, zodiac signs, mail and computer pictures. Wingdings 3 sticks to one idea. Every key is an arrow, a triangle or a keyboard symbol, and the two fonts share no symbols at all. Capital letters are not hands here, and lowercase letters are not zodiac signs. That makes Wingdings 3 text look tidy and uniform, but also harder to tell apart by eye, because many neighbors differ only in direction or shading. Compare the same phrases in both fonts:
“Hello”
- Wingdings🖗︎♏︎⚫︎⚫︎🞏︎
- Wingdings 3⮄︎🢫︎🡗︎🡗︎🡙︎
“Go up”
- Wingdings☝︎🞏︎ ◆︎🞐︎
- Wingdings 3⭿︎🡙︎ ▶︎▲︎
“Turn left”
- Wingdings❄︎◆︎❒︎◼︎ ⚫︎♏︎♐︎⧫︎

“Yes or no”

How the arrows are arranged
Wingdings 3 is ordered by keyboard code, and the arrows come in families that sit next to each other:
- ! to 0: triangle-headed arrows in eight directions (⭠︎ ⭢︎ ⭡︎ ⭣︎ are left, right, up and down), then arrows that stop at a bar, and up and down arrows crossed by two strokes.
- 1 to 7: double-headed arrows, dashed arrows and a zigzag arrow.
- 8 to the question mark: arrows that run one way and then turn a corner.
- @ to K: return and newline arrows, pairs of arrows, and tab key symbols.
- L to Q: U-turn arrows and arrows that run around an open circle.
- R to Y: keyboard symbols, including the Option key, an up arrowhead, an open box for a space and an arrow rising from a bar.
- Z to e: white arrows with shading or a shadow.
- f to o: plain sans-serif arrows in eight directions, plus left-right and up-down arrows.
- p to the tilde: triangles, from simple ones such as ▶︎ to corner and right-angled shapes.
Capital and lowercase letters land in different families, so "Up" and "UP" give different symbols.
Ideas for Wingdings 3 text
Because every letter becomes an arrow, Wingdings 3 suits puzzles: a message that looks like directions on a map but reads as a word once you decode it. Give the arrows to a friend and let them work it out with the character chart above.
The symbols also work on their own. Copy a single arrow from the chart to point at a link in a post, mark the next step in a list, or show a direction in a message. In Word, you can use the font for bullets: set the font to Wingdings 3 and type lowercase u for a solid triangle pointing right. A file made that way stores the letter u, though, so it only shows the triangle where Wingdings 3 is installed. A copied Unicode arrow does not depend on the font. To learn more about typing these fonts directly, see how to type in Wingdings.
Where Wingdings 3 comes from
Microsoft's typography page for the Wingdings family lists Wingdings 3, file name Wingdng3.ttf, as one of three styles alongside Wingdings and Wingdings 2. According to that page, the Wingdings fonts were designed by Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow in 1990 and 1991 under the names Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars, and Microsoft renamed, reorganized and released them in 1992. The page also notes that the fonts offer "arrows in careful gradations of weight and different directions and styles", which describes Wingdings 3 well. Today Wingdings 3 is on Microsoft's list of cloud fonts in Office for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
The arrows reached Unicode in version 7.0, released in June 2014, which added arrows and geometric symbols from the Wingdings and Webdings sets. That is why they can now be pasted as text. This site never offers Microsoft's font file, and the translator does not need it.
Other symbol fonts
The same translator handles all four Microsoft symbol fonts. If arrows are not what you need, try one of these:
- The Wingdings translator, for the original font with hands, faces and zodiac signs.
- The Wingdings 2 translator, for check boxes, pointing hands and circled numbers.
- The Webdings translator, for buildings, vehicles and media player buttons.
- The Wingdings alphabet chart, for every key in the original Wingdings font.
