Strikethrough Text Generator

Type your text and copy it with a line through it. The line is a Unicode character added to each letter, so it stays when you paste the text into a post or a bio.

Why people cross out text

A line through a word is a small joke: it shows what you almost said. Writers use it for a change of mind, such as "I am ~not~ fine" in places that allow it, and sellers use it to show an old price next to a new one. To-do lists use it for finished tasks.

Each mark counts as an extra character, so your text uses up character limits about twice as fast. Screen readers may read the marks aloud or skip the text, so do not cross out anything people need.

Frequently asked questions

How does strikethrough text work without formatting?

Unicode has a combining long stroke overlay, U+0336, which draws a line across the character before it. This generator adds one after every letter, so the line is part of the text, not a setting in the app.

How do I cross out text in Discord or WhatsApp?

Those apps have their own formatting, which is the better choice there. In Discord, put two tildes on each side of the text. In WhatsApp, put one tilde on each side. Use this generator for places with no such option, such as bios and captions.

Why is the line broken between letters?

Each letter draws its own stroke, and some fonts leave small gaps between them. Spaces have no line here, so each word is crossed out on its own.

Does strikethrough text work in Excel or Word?

Yes, you can paste it in as text. Both also have their own strikethrough, which is easier to remove later. In Word it is on the Home tab, and in Excel the shortcut is Ctrl+5.
